Orthoses are extremely effective in treating abnormalities in structures of the foot and lower limb. The structures of the foot play a major role in how the foot functions during normal daily activities. As podiatrists, we focus on how we can improve the functionality of the foot by also reducing stress and forces on different structures around the body.
One of the main problems affecting the structures of the foot is when the arch collapses or drops, also known as flat foot (overpronation).
This can result in injuries to the foot, ankle, knee, hip or back, as the stresses on these areas are increased due to poor anatomical functionality. Podiatrists use orthoses to realign and control the function of the foot to offer support to areas that need it most.
